The Town of Mosman Park, the Western Metropolitan Regional Council (WMRC) and the WA Local Government Association (WALGA), are working together to help residents get their waste sorted in the Town’s second round of bin tagging education since the program began in 2015.
What is bin tagging?
It involves a quick look inside kerbside waste, recycling and green waste bins and then attaching a tag to bin handles to provide on-the-spot feedback for the householder.
The two-month long program will be run by the WMRC on behalf of the Town, beginning on 25 February 2020. Residents may spot Community Waste Education staff, wearing high-vis vests and carrying appropriate ID, at their kerbside on bin day. Letters are going out to households involved.
Town of Mosman Park’s representative to WMRC, Cr Paul Shaw, said the bin tagging program had been shown to improve household recycling and waste management performance. He explained: “following our last trial of bin tagging, cross contamination of our different bins has been reduced. We’ve seen improved disposal behaviour, highlighting the effectiveness of giving individual feedback to households on their waste and recycling efforts.”
Libby Eustance, Manager Communications and Education WMRC said “This program gives residents the information they need to sort their waste correctly, removing confusion while reducing the amount of waste to landfill, increase recycling rates and minimise processing costs.”
“We appreciate that most residents are doing the right thing and assisting in keeping waste disposal costs down whilst ensuring that materials are recycled and reused. As the Town of Mosman Park has recently rolled out garden organics bins it is timely to check how well they are working,” Ms Eustance said.
