Mosman Park Plans for a Green and Leafy Future

The Town of Mosman Park is seeking community input about the draft Street Tree Masterplan that was created based upon community values and aspirations for Mosman Park streetscapes both now and into the future.

Trees in our suburbs are an essential part of building strong and resilient cities as we battle new challenges such as declining rainfall and rising temperatures which are linked to climate change.

Urban trees provide us with shade, protection from the harsh Perth elements, habitat for birds, and purification of the air.  Recent research has been showing trees to play a role in increasing property values by up to 5%, as well as increasing social cohesion among the local community.

The draft Street Tree Masterplan provides a current snap shot of the Town’s streetscapes in terms of performance, diversity, health, and more, and provides recommendations for improvement in the short, medium, and long term.  Part of these recommendations is the expansion of the Town’s canopy by 350 trees per year and broadening the tree species to beyond the traditional peppermint and bottlebrush trees to include other much-loved tree styles.

“Our Town is committed to extending our tree canopy each year, as a way to offset the heat sink that is caused in built-up communities and maintain Mosman Park as the green, leafy oasis it is.  Trees provide shade and visual appeal, enhancing our streetscapes, parks and reserves and bushlands and this draft Master Plan guides the choice of species and planting locations for our Town for years to come,” Mayor Pollock said.
